I've absolutely experienced censorship on SM regarding my book Have a Good Trip (October, 2024), which is nuts because the book is a sober, consumer-oriented look at magic mushroom use. So now I may be able to put the cover of the book on my facebook page, but as you point out in this thoughtful article, the irony is the kind of excesses and harms that I tried to help readers navigate might well be harder to do so in a totally unregulated environment. Thanks for your work, Reggie.
Free speech is value neutral. There is NO progressive opinion or label or study or claim that I want suppressed... but I also want to be able to freely post information about racial disparities in police deaths and the flaws in gender ideology and the shortcomings of DEI programs and the incidence of social contagions among adolescents. I'd love to see some of these issues taken up by the legacy media but I understand that will never happen. Let ALL ideas profuse. Censor NO ONE purely on the basis of their worldview or their opinions. It's a very easy and workable rule.
If free speech is value neutral, go tell fire in a crowded bar at last call. It isn't, and thinking it is shows you've never seriously reckoned with bad actors, spam at scale, disinformation vs misinformation, and info-ops as a govt action/high spend marketing activity.
The answer to all of these issues is more information, not less. What you are saying is you personally know exactly what should and should not be censored, but that is different for everyone, and who gets the final say? If censorship is allowed, that means those who create the rules can decide what is and what is not true. Instead of handing over our power to others, why don’t we trust that everyone has the power of discernment within themselves and can trust what information they wish to as well as say what information they believe is true.
We already have censorship, it's just about which topics get chosen. Talk about Tian. Sq. on TikTok, talk about sex toys on Instagram. You'll see the throttling. The only true place for free speech is 4chan, so let's stop pretending.
You just broke Matt Taibbi’s lil heart! It’s going to be ok, the movement can handle the so called disinformation. It’s healthy for the ecosystem, it’s a kind of composting process!

they say free speech on one hand while they silence everyone who disagrees with them with the other...
